Nelson's Cabin in the Woods

There are a few photos on our photo page that show my 'cabin in the woods'.  Some folks might see this and think that it is a cabin I now have.  I wish I
did, but I haven't owned it in many, many years.  This cabin was one I had around 1975 - 1977 and it holds many special memories for me.

Everyone has times in their lives that are particularly special and memorable for one reason or another.  This was one of those times for me.  I had this
cabin which was located about 12 miles south of town and about a mile from Vogel State Park.  It joined the USFS land and as such had a wonderfully
large backyard - several miles in fact.

I was single at the time of living here.  This was the time that we really started learning to play and perform music.  There were several friends that
would be staying at Vogel with their parents and they would come to my cabin for a time of picking, singing, and visiting.  Others would come just to
listen and enjoy the time with us.  Many of these nights would last until 2:00 am or so, and many others would last until daybreak.

Another friend's parents owned a cabin that was caddy cornered across the street, and a little more in the woods.  There would be a group that would
go there to have a party that usually involved alcohol, smoking, and a different kind of music.  I don't mean to say that is all bad, but they never drank at
my cabin.  It just wasn't about that.  It was about the fellowship and the music.  And those were shining times.

There were the guys and there were girls that came around my cabin.  There were even some parents that came by every now and then.  All were
welcomed, well almost all anyway.

I still laugh at some of the things that would happen.  When we would have a group spending the night, we would always take a break around midnight or
a little after.  It would be a time to get something to eat.  They used to kid me because I didn't have a lot in the refrigerator - hot dogs, cokes, and
professional 35mm film usually.  We had a lot of food provided from the campground and cabins though.  And there was always popcorn that could be
made.  David would usually go around and ask how many hot dogs everyone wanted, then he would count up the ones left to see how many he would
have to eat (usually more than everyone else).

A few years after selling the cabin, I wrote a song that I still sometimes do.  It is called "Cabin in the woods" and was about those times of living there
and learning the music.  It started as a bluegrass song, and has evolved into a more folk-bluesy song.

So now you know more of why those pictures of my cabin are in here.  I hope you enjoy them.  And those of you that were there, I hope they bring back
good memories for you as they have for me

Advice for Bear Country:
In light of the rising frequency of humans and grizzly bear conflict, the Alaska Department of Fish
and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert for
bears while in the field.  They advise outdoorsmen to wear noisy little bells on their clothing or
packs, so as not to startle bears that are not expecting them.  They also advise them to carry
pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear.
It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should be able to
recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat/dung.  Black bear scat is
smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur.  Grizzly scat has little bells in it and smells like
pepper spray.

An Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman were all sitting in a
pub enjoying a pint of Guinness when, as luck would have it, three
flies flew over and one went into each of their glasses.  The
Englishman politely pushed his glass back and would drink no
more of it.  The Scotsman fished the fly out of his drink and
continued drinking as if nothing had happened.  The Irishman
carefully picked the fly out of his drink, held him over the glass by
the wings, and shouted, "Spit it out! Spit it out!"

If you have passion for what you do, the

Passion is like that, it springs out, jumps,
